One Dead, Nearly 1700 Evacuated After Fire Engulfs Viva Resort In Dominicus

DOMINICUS, Dominican Republic — A massive fire ripped through a popular luxury beachfront resort in the Dominican Republic on Friday, killing one tourist, injuring several others, and forcing the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests and staff.

The blaze broke out around 11:00 a.m. at the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort. While often broadly reported as occurring in the fishing town of Bayahíbe, the disaster actually struck directly in Dominicus (also known as Dominicus Americanus), a major resort and hotel strip situated roughly 4 kilometers south of Bayahíbe’s central village.

emergency services confirmed that 46-year-old Francesca Valentino, an Italian tourist, died from smoke inhalation during the incident.

At least three other guests required urgent hospitalization for severe smoke inhalation and minor burns, while first responders treated six people on-site for minor injuries and panic attacks.

According to officials from the Dominican Emergency Operations Center (COE), the resort was operating at approximately 84% occupancy when the flames erupted. A total of 1,690 people—including international vacationers, local employees, and contractors—were rapidly evacuated from the sprawling oceanfront property.

Emergency crews from several regional fire departments responded to the scene, utilizing ground teams and a firefighting helicopter that scooped water directly from the Caribbean Sea to dump over the flames. Thick columns of black smoke filled the air, briefly obscuring the white sand beaches and turquoise waters that draw hundreds of thousands of tourists to the Dominicus shoreline each year.

“The fire spread rapidly due to high coastal winds and the traditional dried-thatch roofs (canas) featured on several structures of the complex,” COE authorities stated.

The disaster destroyed a significant portion of the Viva Dominicus Beach property, though emergency personnel successfully contained the blaze to prevent it from spreading to neighboring hotels, including its sister property, the Viva Dominicus Palace.

The Dominican Department of Tourism expressed grief over the tragedy, confirming that displaced guests were relocated to surrounding resorts in the region. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the Viva Dominicus Beach resort will remain closed until safety audits and investigations are complete.
